Classes, courses and workshops - see details, and prices below:
I teach classes in pattern cutting, sewing, and fitting. Pattern cutting can be taught by Skype, once a few classes in basic methods have been completed. Classes run all year, and gift vouchers are available, and all classes can be one to one, or groups.
I like to offer as much choice as possible to my students as regards topics within the subject of pattern cutting / sewing and the speed at which to progress, though I will of course push you along and organise you - I like you to get your money's worth! If I can see that you are 'getting it' quite easily I will speed up a little bit, and the reverse is true as well. But practice makes perfect - doing it, doing it, doing it....
A recent testimonial of my teaching:
‘I wanted to say that your teaching methods and knowledge are outstanding and I have learnt so much since starting classes with you. You are patient, forthcoming with information and explanations and you talk with intelligence. I am able to pick up what you are teaching me so quickly and that is down to your personality and understanding of people. I am enjoying every moment of my classes and look forward to wearing my completed tweed dress. This dress means a lot to me, as you know, and it is all the more special because I have been able to have one to one lessons with you and have fun making it. You are fun yet professional, and to my mind you have exactly what it takes to be an excellent teacher. If only they were all like you!' Sam

Overview
You know how some items of clothing you just wear to death? I’ll bet that the reason will be either the fabric that you love, but more than anything, I’ll bet it’s the fit. However beautiful the fabric is or the colour, if it’s uncomfortable to wear, and doesn’t fit properly, you just won’t wear it….I have several items I’ve bought from High Street stores on my various rails / wardrobes / drawers and cupboards, that that applies to, and I bet you do too! This course will save you lots of wasted time and money when making clothes by enabling you to have a brilliant result.
What is a fitting course?
This is a course that shows you how to fit the test garment made from your first pattern, (the toile), and then adjust the pattern to make a perfect fit. When you first make a pattern or use a commercial pattern, it’s VERY advisable to make a ‘toile’ first to test the pattern re. sizing, cut, proportion and accuracy.
What is a ‘toile’?
This is a test, or try-out garment, usually done in a cheap fabric (calico or muslin), so as not to make expensive mistakes on your real fabric! The word ‘toile’ is simply the French word for fabric.
Why do I need to learn about ‘fitting’ ?
Fitting is really the key to a garment a) looking good, and b) making it a pleasure to wear. If you are spending time and money on making a garment whatever it might be - posh do or simple skirt, it’s worth taking time to get it right! No two people are the same shape or size - even measurements don’t tell you everything - one shoulder could be higher than the other, or one hip a different shape to the other. (A personal example!)
The FITTING course COURSE 6, shows you how to:
Some fitting problems are easier to correct than others, but I will show you how to analyse where the fit isn’t right, and what to do about it. As a designer and maker of bespoke clothing, this is, in essence, what I do for every client, so I have LOADS of experience!

All the choices of design are yours - I will only advise, but never push you into something that you're not happy with! The toile will tell us if the shape and the fit of the pattern are good and again, I will of course advise on all this.
NB this course is a design course, and not a 'how to do alterations' course! If you have a garment that no longer fits, a new design can incorporate the original garment in a totally new design. It might not be a radical redesign, but nevertheless, new. That's the fun and the challenge!

(This doesn't involve drawing- if you're not confident, I'll draw it out for you, but if you'd like to have a go, I provide figure templates).
- Remake: taking the pattern from the original, and have this pattern to use with new fabric, OR....
- Incorporate: decide which pieces of the original (the more 'Save the Planety' option), will be used in a new similar garment.
- Make a calico toile (test garment) to test the shape and the fit
- Choose any additional fabric needed - list of suppliers provided.
You'll come away with
- A design drawing on paper,
- Figure templates
- A paper pattern to make the new design,
- A fitted toile in calico,(a test garment of your new design), and
- A list of suppliers for suitable fabrics if needed.
